STUART, FL - A worker at Guns, Etc. on Dixie Highway says Linda Schultz Russo trained there several years ago to get her concealed weapons permit.

Russo shot a man who was trying to break into her Palm City townhome Thursday morning.

Click on the video player to the right to watch the latest story

The suspect was identified as 23-year old Christopher Reber, who used to work at the Russo's pizza shop.

Brooklyn Joe's pizza is just a few doors down in the same shopping center as Guns, Etc.

The gunshop employee says Russo and her husband had even taken Reber in for a while.

Reber remained in critical condition at St. Mary's Medical Center.

Russo was listed in good condition at the hospital Thursday night.

Investigators have not released a motive in the Thursday morning crime.

PALM CITY, FL -- A Palm City woman pulled a gun on an armed man who broke into her home this morning, and after a shoot-out, both the woman and the suspect ended up in the hospital.

Martin County Sheriff's deputies say the confrontation happened just before 9 a.m. in the sleepy Lake Village neighborhood of Palm City.

Neighbors say the attacker, 23-year old Christopher Reber of Port St. Lucie, used a shotgun to blast his way through the sliding glass door of a home on Crossings Circle.

The home owner, Linda Schultz, was prepared to fight back. Neighbors say she had a gun of her own.

"I believe shes always had one. There are many in this neighborhood who have all gone for concealed weapons courses now," says Linda Smyth, president of the Lake Village home owners' association.

Smyth says as soon as she heard the shots, she rushed to help her neighbor. She found Schultz injured with cuts and a black eye, standing on her front lawn, calling 911.

"She was hysterical," says Smyth. "I did get a towel to hold over her wound and waited with her until the police and paramedics showed up."

The suspect escaped. Deputies launched an intensive search through Stuart and Port St. Lucie.

Then, around 11 A.M., they got a break. One of Reber's family members tipped off sheriff's deputies to where he was.

Deputies descended on the Suburban Lodge, a motel along US-1 in Stuart. They found Reber in room 337.

Rescue crews who tended to hime found him seriously wounded from the shoot-out at the home. They treated him for multiple gunshot wounds, loaded him on to an air ambulance and flew him to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach for trauma care.

"Everybody in this neighborhood is cheering, and were absolutely elated that she fought back and stood her ground. Shes one tough little woman," says Smyth.

Schultz and her husband own a local restaurant, Broadway Joe's Pizza on Dixie Hwy in Stuart. Smyth says the suspect is a former employee of theirs who has tried to break into their home twice in the past two years.

"Theyre just a wonderful family. This is ludicrous, its absolutely a sin that someone would target a family thats this nice," she says.

Deputies say Reber was transported to St. Mary's with "serious injuries."

Schultz is also being treated at St. Mary's, but Linda Smyth says it appeared that her friend's injuries were "superficial."

I'm not surprised. A .40 S&w has never killed anyone. Ever. Period. Look it up. Google it or whatever.

Here's another .40 caliber incident, where the bad guy was shot 22 times, 17 hits center mass, and still managed to shoot the cop several times and lived more than four minutes after the last shot was fired.

http://www.lawofficer.com/news-and-a..._incident.html

Quote:

The Aftermath
Remarkably, Palmer had taken 22 hits from Soulis' .40-caliber Glock, 17 of which had hit center mass. Despite the fact that the weapon had been loaded with Ranger SXTsconsidered by many to be one of the best man-stoppers availablePalmer lived for more than four minutes after the last shot was fired. His autopsy revealed nothing more than a small amount of alcohol in his bloodstream. Although Soulis could not have known it, Palmer was wanted for murder in a neighboring state.

Soulis made a full recovery and returned to work less than a month later. He has since retired, and now works for a national railroad as its principle special agent for counterterrorism. He also serves as an adjunct instructor for KFD Training & Consultation and Policecombat.com, which provide cutting edge training for police officers in advanced close quarters combative tactics and officer survival skills.

I feel terrible for that woman.
Imagine the trauma.
3 shots, and the dirtbag was still breathing.
I hope her next pistol is a 45

So much for NO ONE BEING KILLED BY A .40 caliber, huh!!!

Guy DIED. OK, he shot up the cop who killed him. But in the long run, the .40 did it's job.

Remarkably, Palmer had taken 22 hits from Soulis' .40-caliber Glock, 17 of which had hit center mass. And while I don't do others research, I'm fairly certain that MANY people have been killed by a .40 caliber. It is the round of choice of numerous Law Enforcement departments. From city to county to state to federal, there are a lot of LEO's who are carrying a .40 caliber in their holster right now.

The .40 SW was great when it was a 10mm auto, now its only good for putting holes in paper.

already posted there, but It deserves its own thread.

I think the moral of the story is, that even the .40 can drop some one day, but when these dudes are doped up on PCP, or Crack/heroin+alcohol or Meth, you have to stop every bodily function: Circulatory, respritory, neurological(brain), etc.

Even if you're packing a .357, .44, 10mm, when they are that doped, its going to take a little bit extra to take em down.

Irons,
I think that Palmer (dead perp) might just disagree with this statement. I KNOW SOULIS (wounded LEO) would.

BTW, Palmer shot SOULIS with his 9mm. Hit him FOUR times. His vest stopped the center mass shot. But he took hits to just above his left wrist, dead center his left forearm and the fourth into his left thigh.

Yet he lived. OK, Palmer was hit 22 times. SEVERAL were center mass and he was NOT wearing a vest as was Soulis. But even with three solid hits on the LEO, he lived. The perp died.

With 22 hits, I'd say almost any caliber might have done the job. Though I'm confident that the .40 caliber bullets did not help Palmer any.

I'm just not a fan of the .40 sw. I watched the entire dog and pony show when it was developed, if you can call dumping 1/2 the powder out af a 10mm auto shell developing, and talked to the MI state cops who got them and hated them. The "only good for punching holes in paper" was said by a Cop on my pistol range!
At the time it wasn't about what worked the best, it was all about which company marketed the best. IMHO.
Its a better round now than it was back then but the bad taste lingers, I woulden't buy one.

Had a local go postal about a half mile from me about 25 years ago. Fortuneatly he moved off in the other direction and had killed three people before a lone sherriff deputy took him out with a single 50 yard head shot with a 38.

Thank god it wasn't a 9mm. We would have never heard the end of it.

"never go to a gunfight without something that starts with a 4"
"if only she had used a .40"

There is not that much difference between a .40 and a .45, in diameter, weight, power, speed etc.

If you want to talk about the difference between a .44 magnum and a .45 or a .357 and a .38 then we can talk.

None of these handguns compare to a lightning bolt from god. It is about shot placement and maintaining fire until the perp goes down.

I'm glad she was prepared and gave the perp what he deserved. I hope she recovers and is ok.

Irons,

Thats sweet. And it will do the job just fine.

Make sure you practice. And consider a muzzle brake. It will 'tame' that beauty so muzzle rise is non-existent.

It has for mine.

He also had a pistol-sized full auto HK91 that fed from mags. I don't know his model designation for that one. I think he made two of them. One was used in a movie (?Steven Segal?), and the other one was auctioned off last year. Unfortunately, I recall that the latter pistol was being sold to raise money for his wife's cancer treatment.

Vollmer's shop put out very nice work. I've got one of his HK94-->MP5 conversions, and it's most excellent. Too bad his lead 'smith left to join the local Sheriff's Dept.
